History
Kailana was born five hundred years ago, deep within the cave systems of the mountains surrounding the Azim Steppe. There she was raised in her family’s underground colony, growing up with her multitude of siblings and learning bits and pieces of mortal life on the surface. This is likely where Kailana and her family would have lived forever, had the Xaela tribes not encroached too close to their territory. Her parents, wary of mortals, decided it best to migrate their colony off the continent of Othard, desperate enough to do so while incubating their latest clutch of eggs. Sadly, this meant that in their preparations, one of the eggs from this clutch was lost. Instead of postponing the migration any further, Kai’s older brother Raelgil offered to stay behind in the Steppe in order to look out for it, promising that he would follow after the rest of his family once he’d found their lost sibling. And with that, Kailana, her parents, and all but one of her thirty siblings flew from Othard to Eorzea, where they would settle in the ore-rich mountains of Thanalan.
Once moved in, the latest clutch of eggs hatched, and Kai busied herself with helping raise them, just as her older siblings had done with her. But as the years went on, as her siblings grew and the world above bustled on, she couldn’t shake off the desire to wander the world above. Eventually, this desire became too much to resist, and on the turn of her 400th nameday, Kailana decided to leave the Tilek family colony, and wander the lands of Eorzea.
Though, her travels were less than peaceful, entering Eorzean society right at the final years of the Autumn War. Kailana quickly picked up the art of combat, her physical strength, combined with her diamond hard scales and exceptional aether manipulation making her an excellent jack of all trades. For the next eighty years or so, Kailana would wander Eorzea, helping folks where it was needed, but never staying in one place for too long. Until Nidhogg’s siege on Ferndale where, when she arrived to help protect any survivors, she caught the scent of family. Pinpointing the dragon who smelled of family, she quickly dragged him away from the rest of the hoard, only to find the dragon in question, a sibling she didn’t recognize. This revelation deeply confused her until she realized, this sibling was the egg that they had lost, over two hundred years prior.
Thankfully, she managed to convince her new brother, Usk, to come with her, where they lived together in a cave system in the dravanian forelands. Here, she taught him about his species, about their history and language and songs, helping him wean onto Malachite and begin his recovery from a blood diamond type crystalhide. Finally, Kailana’s life was reaching a semblance of routine again, when she met and fell in love with a wandering Xaela man. Falling so much in love with him, in fact, that she told him everything. About what she was, about why they were hunted, about why she loved and trusted him enough to know all of this. Her love was so deep, in fact, that she made a soul stone for this lover, the ultimate display of devotion for a crystalhide, only for that devotion to be betrayed.
When he’d learned how valuable a crystalhide’s corpse was, his greed outweighed any love he may have harbored for her. So, on the night that Dalamud fell, where Kailana had freshly shed and her new scales hadn’t hardened, her lover lured her into an abandoned mine shaft in Thanalan. Kai, trusting and blinded by love, didn’t see the warning signs until it was too late, a knife thrust straight through her soft scales. As Kai lay bleeding on the cave floor, she was overwhelmed with betrayal and heartbreak, losing her grip on her aether crystal magic, and swallowing her lover in rose quartz to feed on his aether to heal. Sadly, as she lay there, emotionally and physically recovering, a shard of Dalamud collided with the mountain above her, causing the cave system to collapse around her, a piece of stone impaling her through the chest. In a desperate bid to survive, Kailana expelled the last of her aether to surround herself in a protective shell of rose quartz, falling into a death-like coma afterwards while she healed, dead to the world for the next five years.
When she finally awoke, her cocoon broken through by a Xaela named Arsi Tumet, she was a shade of the dragoness she used to be. Devoid of her great stores of aether, she could no longer transform into her true self, though she thankfully retained her diamond hard scales and the ability to eat gems. Under Arsi’s care, Kailana gradually recovered her strength--or, at least enough to stand a chance in a fair fight-- and set off to wander Eorzea again, this time as an adventurer proper, and reunite with her family once again.
Facts
Kai, as a crystalhide, eats rose quartz, though she will also eat mortal foods. Her favorite are desserts and will try anything colored pink.
Kailana holds a great curiosity for mortal customs, especially music and folklore, since Crystalhide folklore is so sparse.
She has no main combat class, and is more of a 'jack of all trades' type, filling in whatever roles are needed.
She, technically has an adopted son, but said son would sooner die than admit it.
Relationships
Usk:
Kailana's younger brother. Laid in the clutch after hers, his egg was lost when their family migrated from Othard to Eorzea. Kailana found him centuries later, raised as one of Nidhogg's brood, separating him from them during the siege on Ferndale. Since then, it's been a long twenty years weaning him onto gemstones and teaching him more about crystalhides, about himself.
Raelgil
Kailana's older brother. Laid in the clutch before hers, Raelgil was one of the more doting siblings on her and her clutchmates, being the one to teach her much about living amongst mortals. When Usk's egg was lost, Raelgil stayed behind in Othard, believing the egg to still be on the continent. Only recently, after Rael has given up his search and the younger siblings begun to travel the world, that they've reunited.
Karau:
Kailana's clutchmate. Undeniably the sibling she was closest to growing up, these two were nigh inseparable until Kailana decided to leave the colony.
Arsi: The first friend Kailana made after awakening from her coma, taking her to his tea house and nursing her back to health. Once she became healthy enough, the two quickly bonded to the point where she considers him as yet another brother.
Lumi'to was a scrawny Miqo'te thief who tried to pick Kailana's pocket as a kid. She took a liking to him and took him under her wing as a surrogate mother figure in the years that followed. And then in the five years she was gone, Lumi'to assumed she was dead and then took up bloodsports to survive.
